Young Georgian Inventors will be travelling to the USA and Israel STEM camps in 2021

The winners of MIA 2020 competition will travel to the USA to NASA Space Center University and Id Tech camp and Israel Institute of Technology, Technion summer camp.

In 2021, the main prize, a participation at NASA Space Center University, is awarded to team "Medeori" for their project: Treatment and Monitoring of Parkinson's Disease via Ultrasound and SMART Technologies. There are five members in the team: Archil Melikidze (AIA-GESS Gymnasium), Mariam Umankoshvili (QSI International School of Tbilisi), Giorgi Gogatishvili (AIA-GESS Gymnasium), Mariam Ninua (American International High School "Progress") and Mariam Gulashvili (Tbilisi #175 Public School). The aim of the project is to improve the treatment and monitoring methods of Parkinson disease. The monitoring complex (gloves, bracelet and belt) developed by the team will support 24-hour monitoring of the most vivid symptom of Parkinson's disease - limb tremor frequency and amplitude.

"By the decision of the Expert Committee, we revealed three innovative teams which were awarded with different prizes. The first place winning team will travel to the USA with the financial support of the US Embassy in Tbilisi and participate at NASA Space Center University summer program. The second place winning team "Scholar" will travel to the ID Tech Camp in the USA with the support of the Georgian Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA), and the third place winning team "GoGeoGo", will take part in the leading STEM summer camp at Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, with the financial support of Sakpatenti. The winning teams will travel to the international summer camps in 2021 once the restrictions for pandemic will be lifted," - said Magda Magradze, the CEO of Millennium Foundation.

The second place winning team, which consists of students from Sagarejo and Tbilisi public schools, developed Ecological Nephelometer, which allows to determine and monitor the amount of dust particles in the environment. The third place winning team consisting of students from Akhaltsikhe public school, created a mobile application on public transportation in Georgia.

"The US Embassy in Georgia has been supporting Millennium Innovation Award since 2014, which promotes STEM education and innovations among the Georgian youth. I am very proud of this initiative and we are happy that every year, we are receiving almost equal number of applications from Tbilisi and regional schools of Georgia", - declared H.E. Kelly Degnan, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia.

The Millennium Innovation Award is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia. "The development of innovations and technologies in Georgia brings us even closer to the modern world and helps to strengthen the new generation of inventors, engineers and start-ups. The development of STEM education is one of the priorities of our government and the Ministry," - said Mikheil Chkhenkeli, the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia.

Besides the main prizes, the special prizes were also awarded to the finalists teams by the partner organizations: Kutaisi International University, San Diego State University Georgia, Academy Letterato, Georgian National Museum and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport.

The Millennium Innovation Award has been implemented since 2014 with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Georgia and aims to promote innovation and STEM education among Georgian youth.
